Train is the best. Have actually done this. It takes about an hour, depending on the train you get (whether it stops at all the stops etc.). You can walk from the airport to the train station.

Transpennine Express train, runs about Every Hour or two. See http://www.tpexpress.co.uk for more information, including timetables and purchasing tickets. They run direct services, or you can change at manchester piccadilly if times aren’t too convienient (you’ll need to use the fare section to find out more journey details)
