McFly to play Blackpool

Rhod Gilbert Comes to Blackpool Sat 16th June 2012

The Man With the Flaming Battenburg Tattoo

Rhod Gilbert will be playing Blackpool Opera House Next Summer on Saturday June 23rd. He is bringing his oddly named show The Man with the Flaming Battenburg Tattoo to the Lancashire seaside to enthrall what will be a sell out crowd at the Opera House Winter  Gardens Blackpool. When recently asked about the eccentric title of his new show all he said was that he had allowed someone to tattoo the image of a cake upon him……!!

Rhod Gilbert and the Cat which looks like Nicholas Lyndhurst

Rhod got into professional stand up in 2002 after taking a comedy workshop course but then this was only because his then girlfriend constantly nagged him to do so. Within a few short Months Rhod had won several different talent shows and had been nominated for the Perrier newcomer award for his first sol show at the Edinburgh fringe festival. From here he has gone onto perform worldwide.

Many of his stand up routines are based around real life events and his own younger life in the (made up name) village of Llanobl, a name he invented simply to put down an English heckler at one of his early shows. Since then he has expanded on the notion and we are now led to believe that this village lies somewhere between Wrexham and Holyhead in a sort of grown up ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ locality. Gilbert is constantly adding stories around his fictional village to his shows and has even gone so far to have a sitcom featured on BBC Radio 2 about life in Llanobl.

The last touring show which Rhod performed was entitled Rhod Gilbert and the Cat That Looked like Nicholas Lyndhurst and previewed around many UK venues before being performed at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival.

Tickets go on sale Monday 5th December 2011 from the Usual Outlets….

It’s 99 Not Out As The Layton Institute in Blackpool Prepares For Its Summer Season Ahead Of Its Centenary

It’s full steam ahead this year as preparations get underway this week for the 42ndseasonal show at The Layton Institute, Blackpool but it’s not the only milestone on the horizon with the club looking forward to 100 years in business as it approaches its centenary year in 2012.

Layton Institute Blackpool

Layton Institute Blackpool

President Carl Healey is upbeat about the future and is urging regulars and locals to support the club as it puts on the fabulous VIVA show, directed by Blackpool favourite Leye D Johns.

VIVA is set to be Blackpool’s best value night out featuring an outstanding comedy line up including Carl Schofield, Jimmy Bright, Jo Little and Terry Cotta. There’s music for everyone including songs from musicals such as ‘We Will Rock You’, classics from Stevie Wonder right up to date with Lady GaGa, Adele and loads more performed by vocalists Rob Linacre, Darren Coulton and Jodie Kate along with our gorgeous VIVA Showgirls to complete the cast. All this is on offer for just £5pp and the show runs 5 nights a week (Tues-Sat) starting 26th August until November 5th starting at 7.45pm

Carl said: “We’d really appreciate local support at ‘The Layton’ as we enter our 100th year to secure the future of this hub of the local community. We’re looking forward to an exciting show run with VIVA and then Leye and his entourage return to build on the success of last year’s party nights for an extended run in December. Things are definitely on the up following recent events we’ve run at the club and we’re also undertaking more marketing to let people know we’re here to stay, our doors are open and that we have a fabulous line-up of entertainment that they can come and enjoy right on their doorstep that is fantastic value for money.

Show director Leye D Johns of Dudley Leisure adds “VIVA is brilliant entertainment. We want people to remember the time when Blackpool was a Mecca for ‘proper’ performers with dancing girls, singers and hilarious comedy – well those days never really left the Layton as year on year they invest in an outstanding full production show in a room which is made for this type of event – there isn’t a bad seat in the house.

And new this year is Family Friday when the kids are welcome free of charge to join parents and sample a ‘proper’ show night out each and every Friday.”

Show producer Martin Heywood adds “The club have been open and honest about this season as the country’s finances are affecting everyone. We’re working with them on a cost saving and focus on marketing to go into this season with a more profitable and sustainable show without cutting the high quality they set the standard at year on year.

“Christmas is also filling up rather quickly now as people begin to decide on their party night options later on this year. Once again Cabaret Lounge will be totally transformed into a fabulous marquee ballroom, with round banqueting tables especially for our party night revellers who can enjoy a fine 3 course festive dinner and reserved seating for a show to remember with your host for the evening, the outrageously hilarious Leye D Johns presenting vocalists Darren Coulton, Phil Jefferies, our beautiful Thunder Showgirls and resident DJ topping off the evening after the show to give you the complete Christmas Party Night Out you won’t be disappointed in. In fact, the only thing you’ll recognise is the same great low bar prices we offer throughout the year.

The club are looking to next year to really celebrate their 100th birthday with a series of events including specially invited guest entertainers who have performed at the venue over the years kicking off with a fantastic intimate dinner and show evening with the one and only Joe Longthorne on December 20th this year.

Relax and concentrate on the four small dots in the middle of the picture in about 30 - 40 secs. Then take a look at any smooth single coloured surface (probably a wall) near you. You will see a circle of light developing. Start blinking your eyes a couple of times and you will see an image emerging!!! WHAT DO YOU SEE??? MOREOVER, WHO DO YOU SEE???
