Nickelodeon Land to open at Pleasure Beach, Blackpool

Pleasure Beach, Blackpool, is delighted to announce the launch of Nickelodeon Land which will open at Britain’s favourite tourist attraction in April 2011. Nickelodeon Land represents an investment of £10.3m.

This collaboration between Pleasure Beach, Blackpool and Nickelodeon, the number one entertainment brand for kids, will see a 6 acre area of Pleasure Beach transformed into Nickelodeon Land, which will feature 14 rides, 9 are brand new and 5 are extensively re-themed existing rides. Nickelodeon Land also includes themed retail and catering outlets.

New rides include SpongeBob’s Splash Bash, which is an interactive ride where riders have the opportunity to turn the jets onto their friends and blast pesky jellyfish with jets of water for a splashing time. Avatar Airbender allows riders to join Aang on an amazing adventure, spinning and soaring through the air on a giant disk. The Rugrat’s Lost River is a rollicking flume ride where you join the Rugrats on their quest to find the mythical Temple of Spoon.

Amanda Thompson, Managing Director of Pleasure Beach, Blackpool, comments, “We are delighted to welcome Nickelodeon to Pleasure Beach. Both of our brands represent fantastic family fun and Nickelodeon Land will combine Pleasure Beach’s reputation for amazing rides and attractions with Nickelodeon’s favourite fun characters to produce a wonderful attraction, which will wow visitors to the park.”

“Pleasure Beach is a first-class amusement park and popular destination for families in the U.K.” said Gerald Raines, Senior Director, Nickelodeon Theme Parks and Attractions. “This is an ideal location for Nickelodeon and a great opportunity to expand our global presence. We look forward to offering Pleasure Beach patrons experiences that are unique to Nickelodeon and based on fan favourites like SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer.”

Work on Nickelodeon Land will commence in the Autumn of 2010 and is scheduled to open in April 2011.

Dutton Arms Blackpool Re-Opening

Dutton Arms BlackpoolThe Dutton Arms badly damaged in a fire last January will be re-opening this week.

After a refit costing in excess of £300,000 it is hoped this popular Blackpool pub will once again open its doors on Thursday 12th August 2010

A man was recently found guilty of an offence of arson on the pub and was sentenced to 5 years.

The Dutton Arms South Shore Blackpool suffered an Arson Attack in the early hours of Monday 25th January. Around 70 fire-fighters tackled the blaze and around 20 persons were evacuated from the neighbouring flats after smoke poured out of the premises and engulfed the local area.

These shots were taken just after 9.00 am and the smell of smoke is still acrid in the air locally. Two appliances were still in attendance with crews apparently dousing down any remaining hot spots.

All the upper windows have been broken presumably to allow the smoke to dissapate

Fire Crews were called by a member of staff that was sleeping on the premises at 1.20 am this morning and who fled the building with her 11 year old son.

The Blackpool Gazette is currently reporting that a 29-year-old man from Blackpool has been arrested on suspicion of burglary, criminal damage and arson.

The fire is though to have started in the basement behind where the officer is standing

The Dutton Arms is a popular South Shore pub and regularly holds drinks promotions in the Winter time to attract trade and to compete with the local Wetherspoons The Auctioneer.

The news of this arson follows the Grand Hotel event which took place last July a couple of hundred yards up the road.

Blackpool The Gambler (TV serial)

Blackpool the BBC and a Famous Kenny Rogers Song from 1978

Blackpool (TV serial) the plot

Ripley Holden (David Morrissey) is a small-time entrepreneur desperate to make it big with his new state-of-the-art amusement arcade. The opening extravaganza is overshadowed by the find of a dead body on the premises. DI Carlisle (David Tennant) is called in and quickly finds he has more on his mind than murder, when he falls in love with Ripley’s long-suffering wife, Natalie (Sarah Parish).

As the murder investigation deepens, Carlisle closes down the arcade for investigation and calls in Ripley’s son, Danny (Thomas Morrison) for questioning. Carlisle suspects that Danny is hiding something, possibly covering for his dad — as evidence is found at the arcade linking Ripley with the victim. Adding to Ripley’s worries is a huge tax bill, the denial of his planning permission and the discovery that his daughter Shyanne (Georgia Taylor) is having a relationship with a man his own age.

Danny goes on to confess to the murder but Carlisle doesn’t believe him. When Natalie finds out he is a detective she tells him to stay away from her family. This gives Carlisle a renewed impetus to nail Ripley, his love rival. However, events take a startling turn when Danny attempts suicide.

The series comes to a finale with the wedding of Shyanne and Steve. Ripley gives Natalie and Carlisle his blessing and in return all charges are dropped. Danny confesses that he is gay. Ripley hands over the arcade to Danny, who is now in the clear and publicly out of the closet. Finally, Ripley discovers from a prostitute that Danny had committed the murder to save her.

The Gambler (song)

The Gambler” is the title track to Kenny Rogers’ 1978 album The Gambler. The song was written by Don Schlitz (who had recorded it previously, and had charted at #65 on the country charts with it) and was one of five consecutive songs by Rogers to hit #1 on the Billboard country music charts at the time. On the pop chart, the song made #16 in early 1979. It is also the theme song used for Rogers’ long running movie and TV serial of the same name, in which he stars as a fictional professional poker player called Brady Hawkes. It was used in Episode 2 of BBC series Blackpool.

Story

The song itself tells the story of a late-night meeting on a train “bound for nowhere” between Rogers (as narrator) and an unnamed old man who is the gambler. The gambler tells Rogers that he can tell Rogers is down on his luck (“out of aces”) by the look in his eyes and offers him advice in exchange for the last swallow of whisky Rogers has. After the gambler takes the drink (and a cigarette), he gives the following advice:

You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em.

Know when to walk away, and know when to run.
You never count your money, when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’, when the dealin’s done.

The gambler then mentions that the “secret to survivin’ is knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep” and that “the best you can hope for is to die in your sleep”. At this point, the gambler puts out the cigarette and goes to sleep.

At the end of the song we are told that “somewhere in the darkness the gambler he broke even”, and that the narrator finds “an ace that I could keep” in his final words. Some have interpreted this as the Gambler actually dying, confirmed by Rogers’ rendition on the Muppet Show

All the title sequences of this video were filmed within a few hundred yards of Moorbank House
